Watercolour; Natural pigments on Mulberry paper
78 x 63cm
Inspired by Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge, Beyond the Bridge reflects my personal journey as an immigrant artist. The native Crimson Rosella perched on the pine branch represents me, gazing out over the bridge at the beautiful Australian sunset. Within that warm, glowing light, a quiet longing for my homeland naturally unfolds. By bringing together traditional Korean motifs—such as the enduring pine tree and the sacred cranes—with my local Brisbane surroundings, this artwork becomes a meaningful space where Korea and Australia coexist. Painted with natural pigments on mulberry paper, it captures how my past roots and my current life gently intertwine, creating a harmonious world where both of my homes beautifully blend into one.
My art bridges geographies and cultures, turning traditional mulberry paper into a canvas of cultural coexistence. As a Korean artist based in Brisbane, I find true fulfillment in intertwining these two worlds and reflecting my life in Australia through Minhwa. Driven by a sense of purpose to share the rich heritage of Korean art with the local community, I aim to push the boundaries of traditional folk art through my work with the RQAS and as the director of Umi K-art studio.
