Brisbane is a city defined by its river. Growing up in a leafy suburb near its banks, the river was my childhood playground. Today it is still the backdrop to my life. I went to university in the city, I work there now, and I constantly walk, run and commute along the water's edge. Having spent a lifetime watching this specific stretch of the river, I know that it never looks the same twice. This painting captures that constant change.
It shows the tall towers of the Brisbane skyline with the river in the foreground, bathed in the warm afternoon light glowing from the west over Mt Coot-tha. I used a varied brushwork to capture the dynamic time of day, the shifting tides, and the changing light reflecting off the city. Ultimately, this piece is a tribute to my home and a celebration of the everyday environment that shapes what it means to live in Brisbane.
